I’m Lucy (aka materialgirl2011), an environmental activist and writer living in the San Francisco Bay Area. I enjoy drinking water out of stainless steel water bottles, using stylish cloth bags to carry my groceries, and riding my bicycle. I also enjoy non-environmentally-related activities such as reading, painting, and being awesome. Born and raised in Ashland, Oregon, I come from a long and proud line of English majors and Shakespeare fans.
One final though about plastic and about this project: I do not want to give the impression that I think plastic is all around bad. It’s not. Think of plastic-based medical products that save lives, for instance, or plastic bicycle helmets that protect us every day. Or the countless other ways in which plastic products make our lives more comfortable, more safe, and more enjoyable. But there are problems with the ways in which we manufacture, use, and dispose of plastic. And if we are going to find a way to live sustainably on this planet, we need to use less plastic, to recycle more plastic, and, whenever possible, to find alternative materials.
